Advantages and disadvantages of Q-system and a new suggestion

Abstract

   A safe and reliable tunnel design during and after construction is considerable. Common tunnel design methods include experimental, observational, numerical methods, or a combination of them. Sometimes, standard tunnel design methods after operation result in instability of wedges and plastic deformation. The experiment of prevalent design methods in different parts of the world indicates instability of wedges and plastic deformations. In this article, a new method in tunnel designing is proposed, including four steps. Each step completes another, including experimental methods, seismic analysis, instability of wedges and numerical analyses. Existing flaws in every four steps result in tunnel design inefficiency providing the possibility of damage and instability. Analyzing tunnels that have been damaged or unstable after operation causes to propose a new approach in this article to minimize the damages after construction. This study indicates that regarding four proposed steps to design tunnel leads to a safe and reliable design.
